Roulette Odds and the Game

Roulette is a game that has garnered a lot of love over time. It is easy to learn, which makes it very popular with beginners. Moreover, it is a flexible game that will allow you to experiment until you find the version you like the most.

Roulette has gained a lot of success in Australian casinos, both online and offline. Australian players have been playing roulette for a long time, and they have come up with different techniques and tricks to master the skill.

So, what are the roulette odds, and what are the roulette versions you can play? Let's find out.

There is no doubt that online casinos are a blessing for all those who cannot visit a casino whenever they want. Unlike a brick-and-mortar casino, virtual casinos can be accessed anywhere, anytime, as long as you have an Internet connection.

Moreover, you will get a wider variety of games to browse and play than traditional casinos. They also prove to be more economical in the long run.

How to play roulette?

Roulette is a game of mostly luck and some common sense. It is very easy to play roulette and exciting too, as it is a fast-paced game. There are two aspects crucial to all roulette games: the roulette table and the roulette wheel. Every other aspect of roulette games is dependent on these two objects.

The Roulette Table

The roulette board (table) consists of 36 numbers arranged in a 3 by 12 table. Each of the 36 numbers is placed in individual boxes and has either a red or black background colour. Other boxes are surrounding this table, and they are as follows:

  • Three boxes with “1st 12”, “2nd 12”, and “3rd 12” printed on them. These boxes signify the first dozen (numbers 1 to 12), the second dozen (numbers 13 to 24) and the third dozen (numbers 25 to 36), respectively.
  • One box with “1- 18” printed on it. It signifies the numbers 1 to 18.
  • One box with “19-36” printed on it. It signifies the numbers 19-36.
  • One box with “Even” printed on it. It signifies all the even numbers from 1 to 36.
  • One box with “Odd” printed on it. It signifies all the odd numbers from 1 to 36.
  • One box with “Red” printed on it. It signifies all the numbers from 1 to 36, having a red colour background.
  • One box with “Black” printed on it. It signifies all the numbers from 1 to 36, having a black colour background.
  • Three boxes with “2 to 1” printed on each one of them. These boxes signify a column of numbers, and “2 to 1” refers to the betting odds.

There are mainly two types of roulette tables: the American roulette board and the European roulette board. The American board has one zero, while the European board has three zeros. So, an American roulette table will have an extra box with a “0” printed on it, and a European table would have two extra boxes; one box will have a single zero printed on it, and the other box will have a double zero (00) printed on it.

The roulette wheel

The roulette wheel has the numbers 1 to 36 printed on the periphery of the circle. Each number is printed in a separate compartment and has either a red or black colour background. The European roulette wheel has two extra compartments. One has a single zero printed in it, and the other has a double zero printed in it. The American roulette wheel has one extra compartment with a single zero printed in it.

Roulette bet types

We have learned about the roulette wheel and table, and now it's time to know about the bets. There are 13 types of bets in a roulette game. In a land-based casino, players use chips to place bets on the table. You can either place your bets in an online casino by clicking on the particular spot or drag virtual chips and place them on that spot.

The roulette bets are divided into two categories. They are outside bets and inside bets.

Outside bets

Outside bets refer to the bets placed on the perimeter of the board. They are as follows:

Odd or even bet

Players place bets on the odd or even numbers from 1 to 36. They can also bet on both sets of numbers. Players have to place chips on the “Even” and “Odd” boxes to signify this bet. They can bet on both or one per hand. It pays 1 to 1, meaning that the casino will pay you the same amount you had a bet if you win. Suppose you had bet $10 on “Even” and won. You will receive $10 from the casino as a payoff.

Colour bet

Players place bets on the background colour of the numbers. The background colours are red and black. Players have to put chips on the “Red” and “Black” boxes to signify the bet. They can choose to bet on both or bet only on one colour. It pays 1 to 1.

Column bet

Players place a bet on the three columns of numbers. They have to place chips on the “2 to 1” printed boxes to signify the bet. They can place a bet on all three columns or two-columns or one column. It pays 2 to 1.

High bet and low bet

Players bet on whether their chosen numbers will fall in 1-18 block (low) or 19-36 block (high). Low bet is also known as “Manque”. Manque in French means “failed”. The word Manque is used to refer to 1 to 18 because the number failed to surpass 18.

High bet is also known as “Passe”. Passe in French means “passed”, and this word is used to refer to a number in the 19 to 36 block because it has succeeded in passing the midpoint (number 18). They pay 1 to 1.

Players place chips on the boxes marked “1 to 18” and “19 to 36” to signify the high and low bets.

Dozen bet

The numbers in a roulette game are divided into three sets of dozens. Players bet on any one of the dozen sets. They place chips on the boxes marked “1st 12”, “2nd 12”, or “3rd 12”. It pays 2:1.

Inside bets

Inside bets refer to those bets placed within the table. They are as follows:

Straight-up bet

Players bet on any single number (including the zeros). They can bet on multiple random numbers too, but each number will carry a bet. The straight-up bet is also called the number bet. It pays 35 to 1.

Split bet

Players bet on two numbers at the same time. Each bet carries two numbers, unlike the number bet, where one bet carries a single number. Players place chips on the line dividing the two numbers to signify this bet. It pays 17 to 1.

Street bet

You bet on a row of three numbers. You can bet on multiple rows, but each row will carry a bet. The payoff is from 11 to 1.

Corner bet

You bet on four numbers at once. Here each bet carries four numbers. The numbers must be adjacent to each other and form a box to bet on only those four numbers divided by a “+” line. You place a chip on the intersection of the “+” to signify this bet. The payoff is 8 to 1.

Line bet

You bet on six numbers or two rows at once. These rows must be adjacent to each other. You place a chip on the line dividing the two rows to signify a bet on the six numbers. It pays 5 to 1.

Five-number bet

You bet on the first five numbers in roulette. The first five numbers are dependent on what roulette you are playing: European roulette or American roulette. In the case of European roulette, the first five would be 0 1 2 3 4. In American roulette, it would be 0 00 1 2 3. It pays 6 to 1.

Basket bet

The basket bet refers to bets placed on the first four numbers of roulette. It would be 0 1 2 3 in European roulette and 0 00 1 2 in American roulette. It pays 6 to 1.

Snake bet

You place bets on 1 5 9 12 14 16 19 23 27 30 32 34 at the same time. If you look at the table, you will notice that this streak of numbers makes a zig-zag snake pattern. This is the reason that this bet is named such. It pays 2:1.

Roulette rules on bets

There are two prominent roulette rules regarding bets. These roulette rules affect roulette games' gameplay, and you must know about them before you play roulette. The rules are as follows:

The La Partage rule

Even money bets are bets that pay equal to how much you have a bet. For example, if you had bet $20 and won, you would receive $20 as a payoff. Even money bets are represented by the ratio of 1:1 or 1 to 1. The La Partage rule is associated with even money bets.

If this rule is in effect and the ball falls into the “Zero” number compartment in the wheel, all the even money bets are divided into two halves. The casino keeps one half, and the other half is returned to the bettors. This rule significantly reduces the house edge. Roulette games have a house edge of 2.70% when this rule is not in effect. When in effect, it reduces to 1.35%.

The La Partage features in European roulette, specifically in French roulette. European roulette has only one “Zero”.

The En Prison rule

The En Prison rule is a variant of the above rule. This rule is also concerning even money bets only. If En Prison is in effect and the ball falls in the “Zero” compartment, the dealer will place markers beside all the even-money wagers. This act is called “imprisoning” the wagers. Then the dealer will spin the wheel a second time. The bettor will win if the ball falls in a numbered compartment corresponding with the bettor's wagers. The bettor will receive the full wager.

For example, let's say you betted $100 on “Even”. The dealer spins the wheel, and the ball falls in the “Zero” compartment. The dealer places a marker beside your wager locking it in the process. The dealer then spins the wheel a second time. The ball rolls into an even number compartment on the wheel, and you win the bet. You will get your $100 back. But if the ball falls in an odd number compartment, you lose, and the casino gets your $100 wager.

This rule is mostly applied in French roulette.

Roulette play procedure

Roulette games begin by placing bets. If you are playing in a land-based casino, then you buy chips with money and use them to signify bets and their amount. If it is an online roulette game, you either buy chips or bet directly with money (depends on the casino policies).

After placing your desired bets, the dealer spins the wheel. The tiny white ball inside the jumps about with the spinning wheel. After the wheel has stopped spinning, the ball rolls into a compartment. If your bets correspond with the number and background colour of that compartment, then you have won those bets. You will be paid as per the payoff ratio of the bets.

Online roulette does not have a dealer unless it is a live dealer game. You place wagers by clicking on the specific spots on the table or by dragging and placing virtual chips there. The wheel spinning is also done by clicking the “Spin” or the wheel graphics.

A player will place many bets in a single hand. 100% of those bets will not correspond with the winning number. Some of them would be losing bets.

Roulette is an extremely fast-paced casino game. It does not take much time to execute around.

Roulette strategy

Roulette is a game of luck mostly, but you can have some sort of control over it through the math of probability. You cannot predict exactly where the ball will land, but you can calculate your winning chances.

A roulette strategy usually involves a logical method of placing wagers so that your winning wagers are more than your losing wagers in the long run. Following are the four most popular roulette strategies:

The Martingale

In this strategy, you double your wagers after incurring a loss. The aim is to recover the previous losses and gain some profits in the process. Suppose you wagered $20 on “Red” and lost the wager. Your next wager should be $40 on “Red” again. If you win this time, then revert to the small wager ($20) in the next hand.

The Reverse Martingale

This is the opposite of the Martingale strategy. Here, you double your wager after achieving a win. Keep playing with that wager until you face a loss. Then revert to the original wager.

For example, you wager $20 on “Black”. You win and double your wager to $40 on “Black”. You win in the next round again. You double your wager to $80 on “Black”. You lose in the next round, so you revert to the small wager of $40 in the next round.

The D'Alembert

This is a much safer strategy. Here, you increase your bet by 1 after a loss and decrease by 1 after a win. Suppose you wager $10 on “Red” and win. You decrease your next wager on “Red” by $1, and it becomes $9. You win again, and your next bet on “Red” is $8. You lose, and your next bet on “Red” is $9.

The idea is to keep playing till you have recovered your losses. This strategy is perfect for casual players.

The Fibonacci

The Fibonacci sequence is a world-renowned mathematical sequence. The sequence goes like this 1 1 2 3 5 8 and so on. Each number in the sequence is a sum of the previous two numbers. You have to place your wagers following this sequence. Your wager amount at any point in time in the game must be the sum of the last two wagers.

Suppose you start wagering at $10. Your second wager should be $10, the third wager should be $10 +$10 = $20, the fourth wager should be $10 +$20 =$30, and it goes on. You keep increasing your wagers by this sequence if you are losing. Go back two wagers if you win. For example, if you win at your $30 wager, your next wager should be $10.

This is a complicated system of placing wagers, especially when you are new to casino gaming, but you will ease up to it over time with practice.

Types of Roulette Games

The chances are that you will get more freedom to experiment with different variations of roulette if you play in an online casino. If you want to figure out which one suits your taste and needs the best, then you must understand how each of them works. The four most common types of roulette are:

European roulette

You will have a wheel that 18 black spaces and an equal number of red spaces. These slots are numbered in a non-linear manner. There is a green slot that is labelled zero. The total number of slots is 37. You can calculate the odds once you know the possible positive outcomes from your best.

French roulette

This variation is also played on a European wheel. What makes them different is the layout of the betting board and the function of the green zero space.

When the green zero is spun, your wager can either be put on hold or in “prison” so that it is lost or won during the next spin, or the house can divide the win or loss with you equally.

American Roulette

This kind of roulette is also played on a European roulette setup. However, another green slot is added to it and labelled double zero. This increases the house advantage.

California roulette

Upside-down cards replace the slots and numbers. You will not see any of the numbers or colours even though they hold the same place as an original roulette wheel. You have to use the pointer instead of a ball. This method can prove to be inconvenient for beginners.

Multi-wheel roulette

This is a unique online roulette variation that uses multiple wheels simultaneously instead of using the classic one wheel. You can decide how many wheels you want to play with. Each of your wagers will be multiplied by the number of wheels in play. For example, you decide to play roulette with 5 wheels, and your wagers across the table add to a total of $200. Since this is a Multi-wheel roulette game, your final wager amount is $200 x 5 = $1000.

Your chances of winning also increase by 5 times as 5 wheels are in play.

Multiplayer roulette

Multiplayer Roulette is another online roulette variant. You usually play against the gaming software when you play roulette in an online casino. Some online casinos provide live dealer options for their table games. There, also, you play as a single player.

In Multiplayer roulette, you play with many players alongside you. You can even chat with them online while you play roulette and have a gala time together. This type of online roulette tries to emulate the land-based casino atmosphere.

Double-ball roulette

In Double-ball roulette, play happens with two balls instead of one ball. The wheel contains two balls in it, and there is twice the chance of hitting the winning number. This roulette variation was introduced as part of an experiment. It is not a common variation, and most casinos will not have games involving two balls.

Mini roulette

Mini roulette games are a simplified version of actual roulette games. Instead of using the regular 37 number (European) and 38 number (American) tables, mini roulette uses a 13 number board. If a losing “zero” wager, you will lose only half your wager instead of the full wager as it happens in regular roulette. The other rules and procedures remain the same.

Most Australian casinos prefer the American roulette double zero wheels, but you can make the final choice. What's your favourite type of Roulette? Let us know.

Roulette Tips

Keep these tips in mind while playing roulette:

  • Roulette is based mostly on luck, and no strategy can guarantee wins every time. Your aim should be to have more winning wagers than losing wagers at the end of a gaming session.
  • Try to play games with La Partage or En Prison as they reduce the house edge significantly.
  • Choose European roulette over American roulette. The Games with single zero have a house edge of 2.70%, and the games with double zeroes have a house edge of 5.26%.
  • Play according to your bankroll. Place wagers and use strategies that your bankroll can afford. There is no point in going bankrupt because of a gaming session.

Roulette FAQs

What type of casino game is roulette?

Roulette falls under the table games category. You will find online roulette in the “Table Games” section of the online casino games library. You will find roulette games in that part of the land-based casino where they keep the tables. A large casino might even have a separate area allocated to roulette only.

What is money roulette?

Money roulette refers to playing roulette with real money. Traditionally, roulette has been played with chips or some other representative of real money. You buy these representatives with money and use them to place wagers. You receive your winnings in chips as well, which you later convert to real money.
